The hackers stole this vast sum of money by using a specialised virus which can uncover passwords from people’s computers without trace.

No matter what we do these hackers will find a way. Could keep my money at home but then we will have people breaking end. Maybe those people who have alot of money should keep it in a saftey deposit box in the bank we these people can not get it.

I've been an online customer of First Direct for over 20 years. In those 20 years I had never had any cause for complaint, in fact they do exactly what they are supposed to do, and I love them ;-)

I don't do online banking mainly for this reason. I have just started to shop online and I find it quite nerve racking as it is.

Sorry, I forgot to ask.... where do the hackers come from? Country, etc, and do they work at the same place?

I don't use online banking, as for the hackers, i'm impressed they could actually steal that amount of sum, but what's the point of stealing that vase amount of money and being caught in the end!

And yes i trust my current bank very much, ever since i changed it over from a certain bank, i had my card used and a sum of money was used, after that i changed my bank and never again will i use the old one ever again!

Just had £1000 stolen by fraudulent use of hacked debit card details - including 'Halifax Secure' password. Money returned promptly and overdraft fees waived by Halifax. Who was hacked? Me or bank?

Surely your bank access information can only be obtained by hackers if you store the details on your pc.

I tell you the main reason is ignorance, the amount of times you have to explain about internet security but people have their heads between their buttocks and say.... "dont need it, service provider gives it to me" or "my free one seems to work fine".

Then the second is stupidity when a your distant cousin from Nigeria needs a lone and the idiots succombe to this.

About 90% of those who have been defrauded would have deprived their villages of their disposable incomes!

No not at all. A couple of years back I received an email from my bank saying thank you for setting up your new standing order. I was immediately alert I knew I had done nothing recently. I went into my bank account online and someone with had set up a monthly S.O. for £1935 on a certain date which most certainly would have cleaned out my salary. I immediately contacted the bank who took action straight away. I closed my online banking altogether. I do not have enough trust in online banking now.

Have used online banking for years, my internet security told me once that there was a keylogger, which is basically a hacker on the bank's sign in page. After warning me not to use it, I rang up the bank, told them and they said don't use it!!!

But you think of the people that were at that time.

some people find it very easy to work out a scam and excuse the pun but it seems that most of them are from other countries .Us the old down to earth brits
get done because our banks cannot be bothered to make
on line banking more secure, its a pity that these scammers don,t rip off the bankers bonuses

This would explain the majority of online banks adding further stages to signing on processes and deepening the amount of information required for sign on.

I believe they have now entered a level within their own system that prevents keyloggers and hackers getting past that final stage.

I use the virtual keypad supplied by Kaspersky as part of their protection software.

Unless I am mistaken all microsft windows systems have one you can poull up to prevent key logging by not using the keyboard.

Also changing you password frequentky is another very good idea. develop a sytem of symbols or letters for weeks of the year starting your week number 1 at an unusual spot, say mid september and add this suffix to or insert into you standard password for easy remembering. or store them on an encrypted/password protected usb stick for safe viewing.

I fully trust my online banking with halifax and nationwide as they both have software to spot unusual purchases. only once did someone get into my bank, when I had let my Kaspersky kapse due to ill heaklth putting me in hospital and before I could renew it I guess that is when they got me. Also using browsers other than internet explorer helps as this is the one hackers target sinply because most people use it, use another browser for your banking and don't save passwords on your PC if in any doubt as to how secure you are.

Check your banks cover for these situations and you'll find most ensure YOU are fully covered, and also check your home insurance for inclusive ID fraud protection as well as your credit cards.

It won't stop the hassle caused but will get your money back. :-)

My husband has had money taken from his account on two occasions. In the first instance, he was only aware of it when he got a letter from the bank to say he was overdrawn. Luckily his salary wasn't due to go into his account for 2 more days, so he was able to prevent them taking that.
It doesn't matter how careful you are, the culprits always seem to be 1 step ahead

just remember to not store details and log out every time, i've had no problems at all for over 5 years with nationwide, barclays and halifax.

I use on line banking, but change my password every now and again, which can be 1 month, or 2 or 3 months.

I use on line banking and have had no problems with it, but always keep my security up to date and NEVER click on a link in an email (even if I am sure it is from my bank). The other thing that banks can do is call you to check on any unusual transactions, I have only had this happen once for a transaction that I did want to go through - but also when the bank calls you make sure that you can ask them questions to ensure they are who they say they are or call you bank back (it is not only on line where details are stolen).

I trust online banking but the number of phishing (scam) e-mails that I receive pretending to be from my bank or from Paypal or from some bank I don't even have an account with is downright scary. One day last week I received 3 different e-mails supposedly from Lloyds TSB and they were all fake. I NEVER EVER click on anything in those e-mails, even if they seem genuine. If there is a suggestion something is wrong with my account I type the URL into my browser rather clicking on a link in the e-mail. Too many people are not savvy regarding the dangers of fake e-mails and get caught out.

I quite agree. I will not do on line banking. Earlier this year I had a hacker and had to have my computer cleaned at great expense. These 9 hackers should have their assets stripped to pay back at least some of the money. Why do they do this, if not for money, is it a power thing?

I use online banking. I didn't trust the last one I was with but I trust the new bank I am with. It's easier for me to deal with, however, I do wonder whether the online bank accounts are a good idea to have.

I have used First Direct online since they first started offering Internet Banking in 1998. I have never had a problem with security and, as First Direct use a random selection of numbers from an agreed password - not the complete password - it would be very difficult to hack.

I've never had trouble with banking online and I've used several online accounts with different banks. The trouble I've had online is scammers advertising on Ebay and cloned & stolen credit cards. The banks were very good at re-acting to claims and info I supplied them.
